La marque voit le jour en 1926 à Bologne des industriels locaux et la famille Ducati fondent la “Società Scientifica Radio Brevetti Ducati” mais l’activité principale est la production de composants électroniques, à cette époque la radiocommunication est incontournable. C’est en 1946 que Ducati fait ses premières armes dans le secteur de la mécanique et du même coup se fait un nom avec le célèbre Cucciolo, un moteur de 49cc avec des soupapes en tête qui étaient commandées par des tiges de culbuteurs, ceux-ci tiraient les soupapes au lieu de les pousser comme sur les moteurs de l’époque. C’est en compétition que Ducati s’affirme comme un constructeur incontournable dès 1954 Giovanni Degli Antoni remporte le Tour d’Italie au guidon d’une machine entraînée par un moteur de 90cc à arbre à came en tête, un virage s’opère en 1958 avec Fabio Taglioni et l’arrivée de la distribution desmodromique, Ducati sera quasiment invincible cette année là avec un monocylindre double ACT de 200cc et ses nombreuses avancées techniques. Avec l’arrivée des moteurs DesmoQuattro Ducati écrase le championnat mondial de Superbike et le remporte en 1990 avec Raymond Roche puis Doug Polen en 1991 et 1992, Carl Fogarty en 1994, 1995, 1998 et 1999, Troy Corser en 1996, Troy Bayliss en 2001, 2006 et 2008, Neil Hodgson en 2003, James Toseland en 2004.
La gamme Ducati est pléthorique, en effet certains modèles bénéficient de plusieurs déclinaison, aujourd’hui la marque s’articule autour des gammes Monster, Superbike, Multistrada, Sport Classic et Hypermotard.
